A lot can happen in 5 months!

I had a similar situation, I moved from my hometown up to the mountains with my best friend. I had never lived anywhere else before, so it was scary for me. After about 2 months she decided to move back home.....at the time I was struggling, and almost decided to do the same. I am still here through some divine intervention, and it has changed my life in ways that I could have never imagined......Right now, I can't picture being anywhere else!

I know, that's why I am not really making any decision, just letting things happen and see how they turn out. But that type of thinking is so against my usual planning of everything that is hard not to even question it. I am having hard time even putting into words why or why not I would want to move.

let it happen organically, althogh i am in a very similar situation now as far as should i stay or should i go, both decisions would be good, but i wasnt to feel a pull.....

Oh goodness...I know exactly what you mean. Although I'm not in NY or thinking about Portland - just in NC, thinking about bigger cities. This is such a tough one, and I'm the same way - I want, almost NEED, a plan and reason for doing things. Many of my friends have moved away from NC and I feel like a loser for not moving sooner, but I had my reasons at the time. Now I don't know what to do - I would say if you have a job in Portland and see opportunities then go there. If not, find where you belong.

That's the thing. I want to be about to do my photography pretty much full-time. Right now, I have to have a full-time job and I don't even have much money left over because of how expensive the city is.

I believe, in Portland, that I could have a part-time job (and hopefully maybe no-job someday) and be able to have more time and more money for my photography and art.

But I also don't want money to be only reason I move but Portland has always seemed to be such a great place.

You'll make the right decision...I'm partial to Portland. *) We totally packed up and moved on a whim and it worked out, these things always do. I am anxious to see what happens...

Thanks, Mrs. French. I think we came up with a semi-decision. If we can (such as our landlords don't raise the rent or make us sign a year lease), we are going to stay through spring of next year because spring in New York is the absolute best. But if not, we will move in December/January.

My son (who was born and raised in Arizona) moved to Portland ...he loves it. The creative energy, the green, all the opportunity...he just adores the Rose City. My daughter and her husband in Santa Barbara, CA (comparable in price to NY!) had the same dilemna as you--they are actually taking 6 months off to go to New Zealand. They want time to figure it out... Where to plant and grow their future and not just to "move" somewhere to move. Good Luck!

Thank you, benson. I love to hear how people love Portland, even though we pretty much already decided that would be the place if we aren't living in New York.
